Wi-Fi sign maker

Enter your network name and password and download a print-ready sign with a QR code. Guests point their phone camera at it and join without typing a thing.

Exactly as it appears in your phone's Wi-Fi list, capitals included.

Choose WPA for WPA2 and WPA3 routers, which is almost all of them.

Shown on the sign and inside the QR code. Check it carefully.

Tick only if the network doesn't appear in the Wi-Fi list.

Paper size

Your network name and password are used once to make the PDF and are not stored or logged.

How this works

Why a Wi-Fi sign with a QR code

Wi-Fi is usually the first thing a guest asks about, often before they have put their bags down. A clear sign by the router or on the fridge answers it without a message, and a QR code saves them typing a long password on a phone keyboard, which is where most wrong-password messages come from.

Wifi also matters before guests arrive. Airbnb's 2022 hosting article lists amenities such as high-speed wifi, self check-in and free parking among the things guests look for (resource 460). A sign doesn't change your speed, but it makes a good connection easy to use.

How guests scan it

On an iPhone, the guest opens the Camera app and points it at the code. A banner appears saying Join network. One tap and they are connected. No app is needed.

On Android, most phones read the code from the Camera app as well. If not, the Wi-Fi settings screen usually has a small QR icon next to Add network, and Google Lens reads it too. The guest taps Connect.

The code uses the standard Wi-Fi format phone cameras understand: the security type, the network name and the password, with special characters escaped so names with semicolons or commas still work. Tick hidden network only if your network doesn't appear in the list, because the phone then has to look for it by name.

Choosing the right settings

Type the network name exactly as it appears in your phone's Wi-Fi list. Capitals, spaces and punctuation all count, and a wrong character is the most common reason a code doesn't work.

For security, choose WPA for almost every modern router, including WPA2 and WPA3. WEP is only for very old equipment. Choose none only for an open network with no password, in which case the sign shows the network name and the QR code without a password line.

Keep the password out of your listing photos

Your listing photos are public. Anyone can zoom in on them, and a sign on the wall or the label on the router can be read clearly in a sharp photo. Take the sign down, and turn the router round, before you photograph the room. If a password has already appeared in a photo, change it and print a new sign.

If your router allows it, give guests their own network, separate from the one your smart lock, cameras or your own devices use. Changing the guest password between seasons, and reprinting the sign, is a sensible habit.

Printing it

Choose A4 or US Letter to match your printer, and print at 100% scale, not fit to page, so the QR code stays sharp. A matt frame or a laminated sheet stops glare from the window making the code hard to read. Put it where guests will look first: by the router, on the fridge, or as the first page of your welcome book.

Make two copies: one by the router and one in your welcome book or house manual, so a guest who moves the first can still find it. If you have more than one network, say for a garden office, make a sign for each and label where it works.

Before your next guest arrives, test the printed sign with two different phones, ideally one iPhone and one Android.

What happens to your details

The QR preview on this page is drawn in your browser. When you press download, your network name and password are sent once to make the PDF and sent straight back to you as a file. They are not stored, not logged and not used for anything else. There is no account to create.

Questions

Do guests need an app to scan the code?

No. Recent iPhones and most Android phones read Wi-Fi codes with the built-in camera. On some Android phones the scanner is in the Wi-Fi settings, next to Add network.

Which security option should I choose?

WPA, which covers WPA2 and WPA3 and is what almost every modern router uses. Choose WEP only for a very old router, and none only for an open network.

Why doesn't my code connect?

Usually the network name or password has a typo, or a capital letter is wrong. Check both against your router label or settings, and test the preview with your own phone before printing.

Is my password stored?

No. It is used once to make the PDF and sent back to you. Nothing is saved or logged, and there is no account.

Can I put the sign in my listing photos?

No. Listing photos are public and the password can be read from them. Take the sign down before you photograph the room.
